Dark mode for YouTube on a migraine day
Updated 2026-11-02
Quick answerYouTube’s Dark theme calms the UI, but bright player chrome, Ambient Mode glow and Autoplay still hit hard on a migraine day. Turn Autoplay off, enable Dark theme, then add a gentle page filter if the tab still feels harsh. This is screen comfort, not treatment.
Native YouTube settings
- Open any video and set the player Autoplay switch to Off.
- Profile picture → Appearance → Dark theme.
- Repeat on each device; Autoplay is per device (YouTube Help).
Page filter (optional)
- Install Migraine Mode and press Alt+Shift+M on the tab.
- Lower intensity if colours look muddy; keep native Dark theme on.
- Optional: schedule the filter for evening hours.
Good to know
- Ambient Mode needs Dark theme first (YouTube Help).
- A filter dims page chrome; it cannot rewrite protected video pixels.
- See also the native-settings guide: /migraine-friendly/youtube/.
What feels hard on YouTube
- Bright shelves when Dark theme is off.
- Autoplay starting the next video.
- Ambient Mode colour bleed.
- Sudden luminance jumps in the stream or ads.
FAQ
Does YouTube Dark theme darken the video itself?
No. It changes the surrounding interface. The uploaded stream stays as encoded.
Should I use Dark theme and Migraine Mode together?
Often yes on a migraine day. If colours look muddy, lower intensity or pause the extension on that tab.

Not a medical device and not medical advice. Migraine Mode is a screen-comfort tool: it does not diagnose, treat, cure or prevent migraine or any other condition, and it does not replace a doctor. Its settings are based on studies of light, colour, flicker, patterns and motion; the extension itself has not been clinically tested. When to see a doctor.
