OLED screens and migraine: dark mode, brightness and flicker

Updated 2026-11-02

Quick answerOn OLED screens each pixel makes its own light, so black areas are truly dark and dark mode cuts the light from a page sharply. How an OLED dims, and whether it flickers at low brightness, depends on the model and is rarely documented, and no app or extension can change it. Reviews that measure flicker help.

Settings to try

  1. Use dark mode in the system and in apps.
  2. Lower brightness to match the room instead of to the minimum.
  3. If the screen bothers you at low brightness, try a higher brightness with a software dimmer and compare.

Good to know

  • Flicker sensitivity is higher in migraine (Kowacs 2005); see our PWM dimming page.

FAQ

Is OLED better for migraine?

No study shows it. Dark mode on OLED sends out less light, which may feel calmer.

Can software stop OLED flicker?

No. Dimming method and flicker are set by the hardware.

Not a medical device and not medical advice. Migraine Mode is a screen-comfort tool: it does not diagnose, treat, cure or prevent migraine or any other condition, and it does not replace a doctor. Its settings are based on studies of light, colour, flicker, patterns and motion; the extension itself has not been clinically tested. When to see a doctor.
